Jal Jan Jodo Abhiyan has been providing leadership in taking forward the agenda of water conservation, protection & management in different part of the country. PARMARTH SAMAJ SEVI SANSTHAN is providing secretariat support and it has strong presence in Bundelkhand Region of Uttar Pradesh & Madhya Pradesh. Since last three year the region is witnessing drought and affecting the lives of poor & marginalized groups in the region. Water tables of the areas have been lowered down due to frequent drought. The area also comes under critical low water zone due to over extraction of ground water without any measures of water conservation & protection. Presently, Jal Jan Jodo Abhiyan along with water practitioner, rural cadres and representatives of CSOs making effort to conserve every drop of water in the region.
As long term sustainable solution the organization has set up community based model of cost effective water conservation, protection and management under the leadership of PANI PANCHAYAT and Jal Saheli Network. Jal Jan Jodo Abhiyan played important roles in advocating the local level issues with state & national context. Accordingly the organization has constructed water harvesting structure in nearly 110 villages of Jalaun, Lalitpur, Hamirpur districts of Uttar Pradesh and Tikamgarh & Chhaterpur districts in Madhya Pradesh. More than 150 water harvesting structure and traditional water bodies were revived through community based participatory processes, where representatives of PANI PANCHAYAT & Jal Saheli have played important role of community mobilization & water management in their respective areas.
The organization has been intervening to ensure yearlong food security of the poor & marginalized community through promotion of measures related to Soil & Water conservation techniques and Sustainable Agriculture practices”. The intervention is also aiming for enhancement of livelihood options of the targeted community groups with focus of Dalits/ Adivasi & Women groups. The organization has been working towards promotion of measures of water conservation, protection & management as well as improved agriculture practices with the support of progressive small & marginal farmers in the project areas. The organization has provided direct support for construction of water harvesting structures as well as constructed through convergence approach by panchayat & respective department. Check Dam, Spillway, Outlet, Earthen check dam was constructed in the villages. Revival of traditional water bodies and dug well was done in the villages. These structures will contribute in improving the efficiency of use of water and reduce losses and waste. These constructions will augment the irrigation facility as a result of which small & marginal farmers will take two crops. Water harvesting structures will also have the potential to increase the productivity of agriculture land by enhancing crop yields and reducing the risk of crop failure It clearly reflect that water is stopped and stored in water bodies and water structures.
Recently, the Bundelkhan Region area has witnessed timely monsoon rain, which contributed in filling of water structure and water bodies. Today, water structures of 110 villages of Hamirpur, Lalitpur & Jalaun districts of Uttar Pradesh and Chhaterpur & Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh is filled with water. Traditional water bodies of region have been also revived with the support of community members & larger society of the areas. Today villagers are feeling happy to saw filled water in the water structures up to one kilometer.
Parmarth Samaj Sevi Sansthan is a pioneer organization on issues related to community based water conservation, protection & management. The organization has promoted community based participatory processes and developed cost effective model of water harvesting structure in the project areas. The organization has involved community members in the processes and respected the traditional wisdom of villagers in developing water harvesting structures in the areas.
The organization has demonstrated successful model of community based water conservation, protection & management in the dark zone of Bundelkhand region of India. The current need is to spread it different part of the drought hit Bundelkhand region. The community, society, panchayat and government representatives’ should come forward for ensuring wider replication of such model in different part of drought mitigation measures.
